Miles Of Smiles

Nursery 1
Termly Overview

All About Me - Likes and Dislikes
In this term, the Nursery 1 children had fun talking about their likes and dislikes. They talked and discussed about food, colours, animals and more. The children were also given an opportunity to draw the things they like and dislike. At the end of the activity, they shared their drawing about their likes and dislikes to their classmates.

Insects - Names of the common insects we can find around us
In this term, our Nursery 1 children explore the world of insects and learn the names of the common insects they can find around them. Through the neighbourhood garden walks and a trip to the Botanic Gardens, the children had the opportunity to look up close to the different insects such as ants, butterfly, ladybird, caterpillar and more.
My Body - 5 senses
In this term, our Nursery 1 children will be exploring their 5 senses. The lesson will be starting off with the sense of touch. During this term, the children will be visiting the Science Centre and watching educational videos about their 5 senses. This would increase children’ awareness about their 5 senses.

Lesson Overview:

Based on the theme of the human body, children will be learning their sense of touch in this lesson. The Nursery 1 children used their skin (hand) to touch feel objects with different textures.
After that, the children went on a scavenger hunt around the classroom to find two objects each and described how the objects felt when their fingers got into contact with the items.
Lesson: Functions of different Body Part
Instructing
According to Raising Children Network (Australia) (n.d.), "An instruction is when you tell your child to do something".
Giving instructions will set limits on your child’s behavior and let him know how he is expected to behave or what he should do (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.).

Teacher Shannon used different ways to effectively instruct the children. She emphasizes the key points of the instructions through voice and gesture such as "Children, we are going to find two items. After you find the two items, we will come back and sit in a circle" and using fingers to show the numeral two. Clear, simple and specific instructions were given to the children (Child Mind Institute, n.d.).
When giving instructions, teacher Shannon was near the children as she maintained eye contact with them.

Also, to ensure that the children have understood what they have been told, teacher Shannon gained feedback from the children like "children, do we understand?"

Questioning
According to Wright (n.d.), “Asking children questions is a way to guide them toward healthy behaviors by helping them think about what they do—and what effect they have on others”.

Teacher Shannon asked both open-ended and close-ended questions throughout the lesson. Such open-ended question includes “how does it feel like?”, “what other objects can you find at home that is soft?” and close-ended questions “we use our eyes to?”

By asking open-ended questions to children, it broadens children’s thinking processes, to develop their speech and language skills, and to build confidence in their ability to express themselves using words (Under5s, n.d.).
Close-ended questions are used to determine what a child already knows as it helps for further learning (Under5s, n.d.).
