Miles Of Smiles

Termly Overview
Food - Healthy food and balanced diet
In this term, the children learnt more about healthy and unhealthy food and the importance of having a balanced diet. The children had fun learning about the importance of eating healthy food and why they should not eat unhealthy food. The children also did a class activity whereby they classified their favourite foods into healthy and unhealthy categories. They also went on a learning journey to the Health Promotion Board where they learnt more about the effects of eating unhealthy food and having an unbalanced diet.
In this term, the children explored the different modes of transport on land through engaging activities and games. We chose a book, “Mindy’s first MRT Adventure” and had a storytelling with the children. The children also went on a learning journey to the SG Mobility Gallery where they get to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes and try their hands at driving a bus via a virtual reality headset. In class, the children did art and crafts class of creating their very own transportation on land.
Transportation - Land Transport

Scaffolding
Scaffolding is the act of an educator or parents adjusting their support techniques to suit an individual child at a developmentally appropriate level (Spreeuwenberg, 2016).

During the lesson, Teacher Alicia scaffold the children's learning by asking them questions such as " What does a food chain start with?" A teacher should scaffold a child's learning by asking questions to prompt and refresh their thinking.

Teacher Alicia also scaffold the other child's learning by asking questions specially catered for the child. Teacher Alicia ask limited answer questions such as "Which one of these animals do you think eat the snake?" When a child is having difficulties to complete a task, the teacher can help the child think with multiple answers so that the child is able to come up with an answer independently (Rock, 2019).

When scaffolding a child, the teacher will provide support and guidance while the students are learning something new and age-appropriate or just slightly above what a student can do on their own (Rock,2019).

Documentation
Documentation is a systematic art of collecting, interpreting and reflecting on concrete traces of learning (The Compass School, 2018). It can serve as a valuable teaching, research and assessment tool. It typically includes samples of the children’s work, photographs of children engaged in the project work, and comments and transcripts of conversation.

In Teacher Alicia's lesson, she used different forms of documentation.

When the children are constructing their own food chain in pairs, Teacher Alicia documented the process by taking photos. Pictures took would be placed into the children's individual portfolio and given to parents at the end of the school term.

At the end of the activity, when the children are done constructing their food chain, Teacher Alicia hung the completed artwork on the classroom wall. By hanging up the children's work, it makes learning visible and allows the children to come back to it again and re-visit and interpret their learning experiences, hence enhancing their learning (The Compass School, 2018)

By viewing themselves from the outside, children are often better able to make connections about learning or reflect back on the previous learning experiences.
